Abstract
:
The Gulf Cooperation Countries (GCC) have witnessed high rates of growth above the world average rate. For example, among the GCC countries, Bahrain managed to achieve the highest rate of growth of 7.2% in 2005, followed by Saudi Arabia with 6.0%, the UAE with 5.6% and Qatar with 5.5%. In addition to the return of the Gulf's wealth from banks abroad, the rise in the value of oil revenues has produced other positive effects, whether on the improved level of the general budget, the balance of trade, the balance of payments, or the liquidity in the banks. All these together have caused positive effects on the economies of the GCC. These developments have been reflected in the rise of the prices of land and buildings for residential or commercial use, in addition to the unprecedented rise in the market value of shares, as this rose from US$379.4 billion in 2004 to US$932 billion in 2005. This can be explained by the volume of liquidity injected in the market which led to an increase in the value of trade in shares from US$162.6 billion to US$376.8 billion and an increase in the volume of share traded from 13 billion shares to 26 billion share for the period mentioned above.
